How will technology affect physical education?

I am 24 years old and I think its remarkable to think back when I was a child growing up how different the world used to be. Before the explosion of cell phones, hi-def televisions, interactive gaming, the internet, etc. It's not going to stop there either, technology will continue to grow and children will have more 'distractions' to keep them from being on task. My question is how this will affect us in the teaching field. What can we do to help keep kids active, healthy, and focused in our gymnasiums and on the practice field. Technology has its many upsides but also comes with significant downside. Our jobs will become increasingly difficult as technology grows and it will be up to us to use this technology to our advantage.

  1. I believe with the explosion in technology, our jobs as physical educators is going to be even more important than ever. The amount of activity children are getting at home is decreasing more and more. One way we can help this cause is by showing our students some ways they can be active in using technology. Perhaps the dance revolution is a way in which children can have fun and get good excersize. There are other ways but it will be up to us to show them how to put everything in use.

  2. I think about this a lot too. Most of us didn't have the internet in our houses until middle school at the earliest. Children today know how to do a lot more than we ever did. I think it's very interesting, but also kind of scary. The students we teach are going to be a lot more advanced in technology then we will be. I think that it'd be beneficial for us to have to take a tech course each year or so to keep ourselves up to date on the up and coming technology. This will also help us to learn how to incorporate new and old technology into our everyday classroom.

  3. Technology has been a blessing and also a curse all in the same breath. I also remember when I was growing up how I always wanted to go outside to play with friends after school. Now I see how todays generation is all wrapped up in video games and the internet and their cell phones. This is a serious problem because it can very easily lead to obesity. Our job as physical educators will be to incorporate this new technology into our classes and teach our students how to utilize this technolgy while still remaining active.
